Short answer: in the US, buyers search mostly for a service that destroys drives, not for an ITAD vendor. By our classification, 15 of the 25 highest-volume keywords in a 400-keyword sample are service queries such as “hard drive destruction service”. ITAD clicks cost more: the median top-of-page bid is about €21, against €10 for destruction services and €5 for equipment.

We pulled this data while looking at marketing for companies in the IT asset disposition (ITAD) and data destruction space. We wanted to know three things before anyone writes a page or buys a click: what buyers type, what a click costs, and what the first page of Google looks like for those searches. Nothing here comes from a client account. Our analysis groups 400 keywords from Google’s planning data by search intent and compares their volume buckets and bids, and adds a small manual check of search results.
Key findings
- Service queries carry the most demand. 126 of the 400 keywords are about destroying, shredding or disposing of drives, and 15 of the 25 keywords in the top volume bucket fall in this group.
- ITAD terms are the most expensive to buy. The median high-range bid is €20.8, and single terms reach €62 to €125 per click.
- Equipment buyers are cheap to reach. The 40 equipment keywords have a median high-range bid of €5.2, with several terms starting below €1.
- On-site and mobile destruction is a small, expensive niche. 14 keywords, median high-range bid €21.3.
- “Near me” is only 6% of the sample. 24 of 400 keywords, and 21 of those 24 show medium or high paid competition.
What do buyers search for most when they need data destroyed?
They search for the service itself, in plain words. “Hard drive destruction”, “hard drive destruction service”, “destroy hard drive” and “hard drive shredding services” sit in the top volume bucket, which Google reports as roughly 5,000 searches a month in the US. “ITAD” and “ITAD services” are in the same bucket, but the longer, more descriptive ITAD phrases mostly fall in the 500 and 50 buckets.
| Keyword group | Keywords in sample | Median high-range bid |
|---|---|---|
| Destroying or shredding drives (service) | 126 | €9.7 |
| ITAD and IT asset disposition | 85 | €20.8 |
| Data destruction, general and compliance | 79 | €17.9 |
| Shredders, crushers, degaussers (equipment) | 40 | €5.2 |
| “Near me” local searches | 24 | €9.2 |
| On-site or mobile destruction | 14 | €21.3 |
| How-to and DIY | 9 | €3.6 |

Groups overlap, because one keyword can match more than one rule, and 67 keywords fit none of them. The table shows how the sample is shaped. It does not split the market into exact shares.
Why do ITAD keywords cost so much more than drive destruction keywords?
The buyer behind an ITAD search is a company retiring a whole fleet of assets, and one contract can be worth far more than a single shredding job. Advertisers bid accordingly. The terms with the highest bids are all commercial and B2B.
| Search term | Top-of-page bid range | Volume bucket |
|---|---|---|
| it asset disposal companies | €14.2 to €124.5 | 50 |
| e waste data destruction | €2.2 to €98.9 | 50 |
| it asset disposition services | €17.9 to €62.5 | 5,000 |
| onsite data destruction | €8.8 to €58.8 | 500 |

My reading is that a company paying €60 for a click on “IT asset disposition services” needs a landing page that closes, not a blog post. A smaller company that cannot carry that cost should build organic pages for the cheaper, specific terms first and treat the expensive generic terms as a later target.
How hard is it to reach people who buy shredders and degaussers?
Cheaper than any other group in the sample. Terms like “hdd shredder”, “hard disk shredder” and “hard disk drive shredder” have high-range bids around €5 and low-range bids around €0.7. Paid competition on these terms is mixed, but the money needed to appear is small.
A manual look at the first page of results explains part of this. For a buying query such as “hard drive shredder buy industrial”, page one was mostly retailers, office-supply stores, distributors and used-machinery listings, plus one reseller buying guide. Manufacturers were hard to find on that page. For equipment makers, that is an opening: the buyer is searching, and the people answering are middlemen.
| Query type | What page one looked like |
|---|---|
| “itad services” | Vendor service pages, a media-site definition, review directories, a few spam profile pages |
| “hard drive shredder buy industrial” | Retailers, distributors, surplus listings, one reseller buying guide |
| “on site hard drive shredding service” | Regional providers’ service pages, process explainers, one press release |

Is on-site and mobile destruction worth building a page for?
Yes, if you offer it. The sample has only 14 keywords about on-site or mobile destruction, and most sit in the 50 bucket, but their median high-range bid of €21.3 is more than double the general service group. “Onsite data destruction” alone is in the 500 bucket with a bid up to €58.8. Searchers asking for this want proof: whether they can watch, what the certificate shows, and how the process runs. A dedicated page that answers those three points does more than a line in a services list.
What does this mean for how an ITAD or data destruction company should market itself?
I would build around intent, not around one page that tries to cover everything. On a recent project for a data destruction equipment manufacturer selling in 52 countries, we rebuilt product pages as sales pages rather than catalog listings, which is described in the case study. This research is separate from that engagement and uses none of the client’s data. The decision rules I take from the sample:
- Give each service method its own page: shredding, degaussing, on-site, and certificates of destruction. Do not hide them inside one “services” page.
- Write the ITAD page for a fleet buyer, with certifications, chain of custody and reporting, and expect to pay a lot per click if you advertise on it.
- If you make equipment, publish buyer’s guides for the cheap, specific terms and compare models on throughput, drive types and standards. Retailers currently win these pages by default.
- Skip national “near me” pages. Only 6% of the sample is local, and competition on those terms is already crowded.

Methodology and limitations
The keyword data comes from Google Keyword Planner, set to the United States and English, covering October 2025 to September 2026. We entered five seed terms: “ITAD”, “IT asset disposition”, “hard drive destruction”, “hard drive shredding” and “data destruction services”. Google returned 400 keyword ideas, which we exported on October 31, 2026.
Four limits apply. First, the ad account used had no spend, so Google gives volumes in buckets of roughly 50, 500 and 5,000 searches a month instead of exact counts. Second, similar phrases share one volume figure, so adding volumes across a group would count the same searches more than once; for that reason we compare keyword counts and bids, not summed volume. Third, bids are Google’s estimate of a top-of-page click, shown in euros because that is the account currency, and the “competition” label measures paid competition, not how hard it is to rank organically. Fourth, the monthly trend columns came back empty, so this data says nothing about seasonality.
Groups come from keyword rules we wrote, and a few terms land in more than one group. The search-result observations come from three queries run on October 31, 2026 in a single session. They are an illustration of what page one looks like, not a ranking study. We did not cover Europe or languages other than English.
FAQ
What do people search for most in data destruction?
Service queries, such as “hard drive destruction service” and “destroy hard drive”. In our 400-keyword US sample, 15 of the 25 keywords in the top volume bucket were service queries, ahead of ITAD terms and equipment terms.
How much does a click cost for ITAD keywords?
Google’s estimates put the median high-range top-of-page bid for ITAD terms at about €21. Individual terms such as “it asset disposal companies” reach about €125 at the top of the range, while drive destruction terms are around €10 and equipment terms around €5.
Do equipment manufacturers show up on page one for buying searches?
In our small check, rarely. A search for an industrial hard drive shredder returned mostly retailers, distributors, surplus listings and a reseller guide. That is one query on one day, so treat it as a signal to test, not as a rule.
Are exact search volumes available for these keywords?
Not from a Keyword Planner account without ad spend. It reports buckets of about 50, 500 and 5,000 searches a month. Paid SEO tools give narrower estimates, but those are modeled numbers too.
